Maserati 4c-v8?

A few reports have surfaced saying that Maserati has its eye on the Alfa 4c as the basis for competing with the Porsche 911.

Maserati's focus had altered to new saloons and an SUV from the wider fiat parts bin. But the Modenese want to fightback with a mid-engined V8 sports car to bring the marque back to its roots.

Uk magazine Evo showed a mock up drawing speculating it would revive the GranSport name and is being pushed to fiat execs by Harald Wester, chief executive of Alfa Romeo and Maserati who will build the 4c.

The 4c was entered in Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este for a design contest for concepts and prototypes. Inspired by the beauty of lake Como the 4C was declared the winner against stuff competition from Aston Martin AM310, BMW z4 zagato, Stile Bertone Jaguar B99 and Ford's EVOS concept.

Alfa Mx5

It seems ever hungry for synergies and not content with rebadged Chryslers, Alfa are seeking yet more tie-ups with other manufacturers.   They have signed a a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for the development and manufacturing of the new Alfa Romeo spider based on Mazda’s next-gen MX-5.

Alfa-Maserati 4c

News providers Reuters are reporting that Maserati will be building 2,500 Alfa Romeo’s a year prompting speculation they will be building the 4c.

The car is said to be built in Maserati’s Modena factory from May 2013. With heavy Ferrari involvement in the Maserati factory it can only be a good thing given the massive improvement in efficiency and quality under that partnership.

Fiat are once again being ambitious in wanting Maserati to tackle the USA by making 10 times more cars by 2015 - aiming at US mainstays of sports utility vehicle and  sports sedan/saloons.

Abarth Spider

Evo magazine are reporting that the Abarth half sister to the 4c is still very much alive, despite rumours to the contrary. Quoting Ivan Gibson Abarth UK's brand manager as their source.

He went on to add that it will be a year behind the Alfa 4c if the prototype is good enough to get the go-ahead.

Power is likely to be the same unit and gearbox set-up hinting at a styling reskin. As previously reported here they say the chassis has had large chunks replaced by aluminium subframes in the in-house takeover

4c delayed until 2014

UK magazine Autocar is reporting further delays to both the introduction of the 4c and reintroduction of Alfa Romeo to the USA. They are claiming sources confirming Alfa Romeo’s US relaunch will be at the Detroit motor show in 2014 also debuting the production 4C. This is a significant delay to the earlier target of “early” 2013.

Styling Influences pt3 – Zagato TZ Stradale

The long and special relationship between Alfa Romeo and  Zagato took a strange twist in 2011 with the factory officially sanctioning the manufacture of the TZ3. Why was this so different ? Alfa Romeo have been allowing variants on production cars since the 1930’s – well it is actually “very” different from any other Alfa.

It sees the re-body of Dodge Viper (in ACR-X specification no less) with an 8.4ltr v10 pushing  out 640bhp and 585 lbft. of torque. As with all the mechanicals the front engine rear-drive layout,  a long 99” wheelbase remain unchanged .

Alfa Romeo attributed the success down to the latest product line-up and improving dealer network  in the top 10 for the J.D. Power UK customer satisfaction survey. Alfa went on to add the success of their highly competitive finance/incentive offers as being another major factor boosting the overall performance.
